After undertaking MA studies in TESOL (Central Connecticut State University, 1989), María de los Ángeles Gómez González received the first European doctorate in English Linguistics ever awarded in Galicia (1996, PhD Extraordinary prize) from the University of Santiago de Compostela in Spain, where she has been Full Professor in English Language and Linguistics since 2006. Currently, she coordinates and teaches the courses English Phonetics and Phonology, English Syntax and Semantics, and Pragmatics and Discourse Analysis.

Principal investigator of the research group SCIMITAR (http://www.usc.es/scimitar/), Professor Gómez González researches functional and applied linguistics, as well as pragmatics and discourse analysis. More specifically, she investigates the phonetic, morpho-syntactic and pragmatic dimensions of constructions in present-day English and Spanish, as well as the issues of coherence, cohesion and linguistic variation across different text types and genres, mostly adopting a quantitative empirical approach and a (critical) discourse analysis perspective. She has published well over 50 book chapters, book reviews and articles in numerous scholarly journals such as Applied Linguistics, Discourse Studies, Language Sciences, Word, Languages in Contrast, International Journal of Corpus Linguistics, Functions of Language, among others, as well as the following books: The Theme-Topic Interface: Evidence from English (John Benjamins, 2001), A New Architecture for Functional Grammar (Mouton de Gruyter, 2004), Studies in Functional Discourse Grammar (Peter de Lang, 2005), The Dynamics of Language Use: Functional and Contrastive Perspectives (Benjamins, 2005), Languages and Cultures in Contrast and Comparison and Current trends in Contrastive Linguistics: Functional and cognitive perspectives (Benjamins, 2008a, b), The Functional Perspective on Language and Discourse: Implications and Applications, Theory and Practice in Functional-Cognitive Space. (Benjamins, 2014a, b), and English Pronunciation for Speakers of Spanish. From Theory to Practice (Mouton de Gruyter, 2016).

In addition to her published research, María de los Ángeles Gómez González has been invited to give doctoral-level courses and colloquia at other universities including the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, University College of Ripon and York St. John, University of Nottingham, University of Zürich, University of York, and University of Gothenburg. She has also been an invited speaker at international conferences such as Valoración en el discurso periodístico: perspectivas retóricas e interculturales (University of Navarra), Genre and Register-related Text and Discourse Features in Multilingual Corpora International Conference (Institut Libre Marie Haps, Brussels), V European Congress of Methodology (The European Association of Methodology (EAM) in collaboration with the Society for Multivariate Analysis in the Behavioural Sciences (SMABS)), New Trends in English Studies (University of A Coruña), Contragram Workshop 2011 (Ghent University), and others. She has directed ten BA/MA theses (four of which will be defended this year) and is currently supervising four doctoral dissertations. She has been the principal investigator of seven research projects awarded by the Spanish Ministry of Education and the Galician Autonomous Government.

Professor Gómez González also serves on the editorial and scientific boards of a number of journals such as Annual Review of Cognitive Linguistics, Open Journal of Modern Linguistics, International Journal of English Studies, and English Linguistics Research. She acts as a regular reviewer for Applied Linguistics and John Benjamins (Pragmatics and Beyond New Series), and has done occasional review work for the Journal of Pragmatics,Pragmatics, Functions of Language, and TEXT, among others, and is the member of the advisory committee of a number of international conferences including: 49th International Meeting of the Societas Linguistica Europaea (Leiden, 2015), 48th International Meeting of the Societas Linguistica Europaea (Poland, 2014), 46th International Meeting of the Societas Linguistica Europaea (Croacia, 2013), 45th International Meeting of the Societas Linguistica Europaea (Stockholm, 2012), 44th International Meeting of the Societas Linguistica Europaea (University of La Rioja, 2011), Conference on Corpus Linguistics (2010, 2011, 2012, 2013).

She has been the chief organizer of three international conferences, Second Santiago de Compostela International Workshop on Discourse Analysis (2013), First Santiago de Compostela International Workshop on Discourse Analysis (2011) and 4th International Contrastive Linguistics Conference (University of Santiago de Compostela, 2005). She has also organized other smaller conferences and several other workshops and seminars.
