The Tower of Hercules

The Tower of Hercules, symbol of the city of A Coruña, Galicia, is the oldest working lighthouse. Its exact date of construction yet to be determined, the present structure dates from the 2nd century A.D., although authors indicate a previous prehistoric, phoenician or even celtic-irish use[1]. The several changes undergone by this monument have not only affected its structure but are also a reflection of the evolution of the city of A Coruña. It should be noted that historic documents indicate the lighthouse was located on an island, which today is a peninsula where most of the city of A Coruña is situated. On June 27th, 2009, it was declared UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The main goal of this project, still in a developing stage, is the historical reconstruction of the Tower of Hercules and its surrounding area, enabling space and time navigation through a virtual model, with a view to web publication.
This work analyses the developed reconstruction and the possibilities of creating a virtual model for Web publication. This publication must be carried out by people with knowledge in CG design supervised by a historian and not by groups of programmers or computer experts.
