Research Interests

My research interest is focused on the new analytical methods for the determination of polar emerging contaminants & study of their behavior in the environment (wastewater, surface water, drinking water, atmospheric environment, etc.), mainly within the following topics:


  • COMPOUNDS OF INTEREST: pharmaceuticals, drugs of abuse, antimicrobial agents (triclosan, parabens, etc.), herbicides, UV filter compounds, organophosphorus and brominated flame retardants, perfluorinated chemicals, environmental transformation products, etc.


  • SAMPLE PREPARATION: improved solid-phase extraction aiming on selectivity improvement, solid-phase microextraction, membrane extraction, low cost sorptive materials, new derivatisation strategies, automation through sequential injection analysis, passive sampling, etc.


  • CHROMATOGRAPHY-MASS SPECTROMETRY: improvement of methods based on liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS:triple-quad -QQQ- and quad-time-of-flight-QTOF-) on both reduced matrix effect and expanded applications, screening and elucidation of  transformation routes through LC-QTOF systems, gas chromatography-mass spectrometry applications (GC-MS with ion trap -IT-, quadrupole -Q- and QTOF) for both qualitative and quantitative applications.


  • ENVIRONMENTAL TRANSFORMATION OF POLLUTANTS: elucidation of the transformation path of emerging pollutants with free chlorine, during biological treatment and also by photochemical reactions, investigation of the fate of pollutants and their transformation products in the environment (levels, removal, persistence, etc).


  • OTHER TOPICS: collaboration research on biaccumulation of pollutants and toxicity evaluation. Sewage epidemiology, i.e. evaluating the consumption of drugs through the water concentration of their markers (drugs and metabolites).
